"I am large, I contain multitudes"
Walt Whitman got it right, we are not one thing or another we are one thing AND another. I am a psychologist - I love the subject and have been intrigued by it all my life. I am a musician and a writer. I could not imagine stopping either and I have some success with both. And I am inveterate explorer give or take a dodgy knee. I am also a father, partner, hopefully a good friend. And a teacher and a therapist. I am an OK yachtsman, a clumsy skier and a half-qualified pilot. ( I can do take-offs but not landings). All of these things inform and shape and inspire the others. I believe a full life is not one about achieving greater and greater success - whatever that may be but is about 'inhabiting' yourself as much as possible and in that you may become truly great. We are paradoxical and serendipity may be the alchemy of our futures.
In the beginning...
I was 16 years old, quite bright. Well, not dumb anyway. No sporting prowess to speak of. Largely ignored by the opposite sex. I guess a bit of an outsider. I used to play the trumpet, but had given up because of the floppy lips and a distinct lack of cool. At school I did okay, in a rather erratic sort of way. My school reports were all along the lines of, "Capable, but unpredictable." I had no real idea of where my life was going or what I wanted to do. My own vague idea was that I might be a Spitfire pilot, except the war was long over and anyway, I was shortsighted.
